Belarus is situated in the eastern part of Europe. It covers 207 600 sq km and it stretches for 650 km from east to west and for 560 km from north to south. Belarus borders on Latvia and Lithuania in the north-west, on Russia in the north and east, in the Ukraine in the south-east and on Poland in the west. The population is over 10 million inhabitants.

Belarus has a flat country, there are no chains of mountains. Belarus is remarkably beautiful with its blue lakes and ribbons of rivers edged with thick forests. There are some 3 000 rivers flowing over the territory of Belarus and the longest of them are the Dnieper, the Nieman, the Zapadnaya Dvina. The republic has over 10 000 lakes. More than a quater of the Republic of Belarus is covered with forest and bushes.
There are 2 official languages in Belarus: Russian and Belarusian languages.
The Republic consists of 6 regions with 6 region centers. They are Minsk, Grodno, Gomel’, Vitebsk, Mogilev and Brest.
Minsk is a capital of Belarus and its main political, industrial, economic, scientific and cultural centre. The city stands on the river Svisloch. Minsk has a population of about 2 million people. It has always been a place where different nations and cultures crossed and interacted. This is reflected in the structure of the population of Minsk. Besides Belarusians who make up over 60 per cent of the population there are Russians, Poles, Ukrainians, Jews, Tatars and representatives of other nationalities.
Present-day Minsk is a well-planned city with numerous shady parks, broad roads and avenues, modern buildings and a few churches which have survived as relics of the past. The cultural life of the capital is very diverse. There are about ten theatres, a few concert halls, a circus, a lot of cinemas, palaces of culture, libraries, clubs and other cultural centers.
Minsk has a highly developed industry. The main industries are mashinery, transport, heavy industry, metallurgy. The city has a lot of plants and factories which produce tractors, heavy trucks, watches, refrigerators, electronic equipment and products of light industry. A Silicon Valley is being built at the moment. The centre of science in the country is the Academy of Science which was opened in 1929.
Minsk has many faces and means many things to many peolpe, but most visitors will remember the hospitality and cordiality of the citizens of Minsk.
